Astrological transits: what they are and how they affect your daily life

If you’ve ever felt that some days everything flows and others everything seems stuck, astrological transits may offer an explanation. They are the constant movement of planets in the sky and the way they interact with your natal chart.

What is an astrological transit?

A transit occurs when a planet in its current path forms a significant angle (aspect) with a point in your natal chart. It’s as if today’s sky is having a conversation with the sky on the day you were born. Each conversation brings a different theme.

The planets and their speed

Not all transits feel the same. It depends on the planet:

  • Moon — Changes sign every 2.5 days. Affects your mood, intuition, and immediate emotional needs. Its effects are subtle and fleeting.
  • Mercury — Cycles of about 3 weeks per sign. Influences communication, short trips, and decision-making. Its retrograde is famous for causing misunderstandings.
  • Venus — Approximately 4 weeks per sign. Touches on relationships, pleasure, money, and what you value. Its transits tend to bring pleasant moments.
  • Mars — About 6 weeks per sign. Activates your energy, motivation, and sometimes your impatience. It can push you to act or create tension.
  • Jupiter — One year per sign. Transits of expansion, opportunities, and growth. Where Jupiter passes, things tend to grow.
  • Saturn — Two and a half years per sign. Brings lessons, structure, and responsibility. Its transits are demanding but deeply transformative.
  • Uranus, Neptune, Pluto — Years in the same sign. They mark generational transformations and deep changes felt when they touch sensitive points in your chart.

How do they affect your daily life?

Transits don’t cause events — they signal energetic climates. Some everyday examples:

Mercury transiting your sun sign — Days when you express yourself more clearly, have good ideas, or receive important news.

The Moon passing through your moon sign — Moments of heightened emotional sensitivity. You may feel more intuitive or more vulnerable than usual.

Mars activating your chart — Increased energy and drive to act. It can also manifest as irritability or impatience.

Saturn aspecting your Sun — Periods where you feel more weight or responsibility. These are maturation stages that, while difficult, build something solid.

Jupiter touching your Venus — Favorable times for love, finances, or simply enjoying life more fully.

Retrograde transits

When a planet appears to move backward from our perspective, we say it’s retrograde. It’s not a negative phenomenon — it’s an invitation to review, rethink, and reevaluate:

  • Mercury retrograde — Review your communications and contracts before signing
  • Venus retrograde — Reflect on your relationships and values
  • Mars retrograde — Reconsider where you’re directing your energy

How to work with transits

You don’t need to memorize ephemerides or calculate aspects every morning. The most valuable thing is to develop an awareness of cosmic rhythms:

  1. Know your natal chart — It’s your base map. Without it, transits are just general information
  2. Watch the slow transits — Jupiter and Saturn mark the important themes of the year
  3. Listen to your body and emotions — Often you feel the transit before you see it in the sky
  4. Don’t fear difficult transits — Tense aspects bring the most growth

Transit astrology isn’t about fearing the future — it’s about navigating the present with greater awareness and compassion toward yourself.
